Centrifuge tubes commonly used in laboratories are mainly made of plastic and stainless steel. Because glass centrifuge tubes cannot be used in high-speed or ultra-speed centrifuges, they are rarely used in laboratories. Commonly used materials for plastic centrifuge tubes include polyethylene (PE), polycarbonate (PC), polypropylene (PP), etc. Among them, PP tubes have better performance. The advantages of the plastic centrifuge tube are obvious, that is, it is transparent (or translucent), and the hardness is small, and the gradient can be taken out by the puncture method. The disadvantage is that it is easily deformed, has poor resistance to organic solvents, and has a short service life.
PP (polypropyiene) is semi-transparent. Stable chemical and temperature performance, but brittle under low temperature. Do not centrifuge below 4°C.
PA (polyallomer) is semi-transparent. The chemical property is the most stable, but it tends to become soft at high temperature.
CAB (celluloseacetobutyrate) LH is used at 0-15℃, and HT is used at 20-40℃. transparent. It can be used for dilute acids, bases and salts. But when the pH is above 8, organic solvents, heavy salts such as CsCl can only be used under limited conditions. Suitable for alcohol and sucrose gradients.
PC (polycarbonate): Good transparency, high hardness, and can withstand high temperature disinfection. But it is not resistant to strong acids and alkalis and certain organic solvents such as alcohol, oil, and MDSO. It’s not full. Mainly used for centrifugation above 50,000 rpm.
PCR (polyclear) is similar to PC, but harder than PC
PE (polyethylene) is opaque. Stable to acetone, acetic acid, hydrochloric acid, etc. It becomes soft at high temperature and must be filled.
PS (polystyrol) is transparent and hard. It is stable to most aqueous solutions, but can not be stained with many organic substances, and is used for one-time use. Mostly used for low-speed centrifugation.
PF (polyflor-100 ℃-140 ℃ use, translucent.
Stainless steel can resist heat, chemical corrosion, and can be autoclaved, but it is heavier and more expensive.
CN tube: The texture is soft and transparent, but it is not resistant to strong acids, alkalis and certain organic solvents, and cannot be autoclaved. It is suitable for sucrose and glycerol density gradient centrifugation. Transparent and easy to collect.
